More Great Stuff
On hot summer nights when I was a child, most of the kids in the neighborhood could be found sitting on our front porch, listening to my mom tell stories. All of us kids snuggled up close and screeched with delight as mom bellowed in a very deep voice, “I want my golden toe!” The story was The Man with the Golden Toe. We had all heard the story many times before, but every night no matter how many stories mom told or how late it was, at the end of each evening we always begged mom to tell the Man with the Golden Toe, just like she had the night before, so we could all cling together and squeal with fright.
My mom could make anything into a riveting story, like the time she was driving down the street and a huge dog came out of nowhere and ran right smack into the side of the car. It made a great big dent in the door that my parents could never afford to get fixed, so the evidence was available for years whenever my mom told that tale. But we didn’t need the evidence. Just the sound of my mom’s dramatic voice and her amazing ability to fill us with breathless anticipation until the very last line of the story were enough to keep the kids coming back night after night all summer long.
Like my mom, the women in my family have all been storytellers as long as anyone can remember. Also, women in my family have always been called ‘Ma (pronounced maw) when they become grandmas. To carry out both traditions, I have created a line of audio books for children called the ‘Ma Jones Series that will be included on this website. And even though I won’t be telling The Man with the Golden Toe, it’s my hope that the stories presented here will keep kids (and maybe even a few adults) coming back for more. The first story, “If Grandma Says, I Can,” will be followed by others in the near future. So, check back in at granniesrock.com from time to time to see what’s been added to the list of ‘Ma Jones audio books by Jessey Ina-Lee
